Each newsletter includes a curated list of articles that fit a theme within the financial services industry. And, because at SOTE we each share a passion for music, we always include a few song recommendations!
Revisions to Regulation
Given the events we have seen in the financial services industry this year, it is no surprise that discussions of regulatory changes are taking place. Last Thursday, Forbes published an article where author Frank Sorrentino outlined the need to modernize existing regulations that were established 13 years ago with the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. That same day, congressmen French Hill (AR), Glenn Thompson (PA), and Dusty Johnson (SD) introduced the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act. This legislation is designed to provide a regulatory framework for the digital assets space. And it’s not just the US that is seeing a need for new regulation. Later this month the UK will introduce the Consumer Duty regulation, which will hold financial institutions to higher standards with regards to customer service.
The common theme throughout these suggested regulatory changes is trust. Seeking ways to provide customers and financial service providers with greater clarity about protocols for ongoing businesses as well as failed institutions. We are not highlighting these proposed changes because we fully endorse each suggestion. Rather, were are highlighting these proposals because we know that trust is a critical element of maintaining a strong financial system and economy, and ideas need to be explored.
