Empowering Women in Financial Services

By Gretchen Bruinsma

Last month we learned of President Biden’s plan to appoint tribal leader Marilynn Malerba as U.S. treasurer, which is a major milestone and cause for celebration for both women and the Native American community. Ronald Klein, White House Chief of Staff, shared via Twitter that, “for the first time in history, the signatures of two women will appear on our currency.”

In the article ‘Stemming The Flow: How To Keep Women in Finance’ (linked below), author Bob Contri reports, “as of 2021, women held just 5% of CEO positions, 19% of C-suite roles, and 21% of board seats.” Despite these discouraging numbers, the article goes on to share how companies around the globe are making meaningful changes in support of gender equity. Financial services institutions in Hong Kong, for example, are offering flexible work hours and mentoring programs; and in Japan, the Tokyo Stock Exchange is requiring companies to publish their diversity policies. At SOTE, we offer leadership coaching within the financial services industry, so reading about how these institutions are taking significant steps to help their employees thrive is very inspirational for our team! Progress is also being made for women entrepreneurs in need of business loans. The Mastercard Center recently published ‘Give Her Credit: Expanding Women’s Access to Finance’ (linked below), which details how financial institutions are updating their processes for small-business loans to better accommodate the way that women handle their finances. And if you have two minutes, we highly recommend you watch the Bloomberg Quicktake video, ‘Empowering Creative Women At Cannes 2022.’ Although the focus is on the film industry and the See It Be It program, the message that Program Ambassador Swati Bhattacharya shares about the importance of women mentoring women can be applied to any industry.

What We’re Watching…

“Female mentorship is important because it is not just about tokenism and putting a woman out there. It’s all about giving her an ecosystem to thrive.

What We’re Listening To…

I AM WOMAN
Emmy Meli

Emmy Meli begins her breakout single with the empowered lyrics “I am woman, I am fearless / I am sexy, I’m divine / I’m unbeatable, I’m creative / Honey, you can get in line.” In response to the overwhelming success of her first single, the 22-year-old shared, “The more you push through and the harder you work, the more rewarding this is. For a long time I didn’t give myself credit for how hard I worked and how talented I am, but now I’m owning my power. My life is beginning.”
