Let’s Travel Together

By Gretchen Bruinsma

“When you put love out in the world it travels, and it can touch people and reach people in ways that we never even expected.” — Laverne Cox, Actress & LGBTQ+ Advocate

At SOTE, our mission is to be a trusted and beneficial partner to every member of our community. We began this newsletter to serve as a source of industry knowledge and guidance; and this month we are proud to use our platform to provide you with articles, videos, and music that elevate LGBTQ+ voices.

In a press release earlier this month, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) reported that, “According to the most recent data from the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), the LGBTQ+ business community includes 1.4 million business owners. And by their projections, the NGLCC estimates that LGBTQ-owned businesses contribute over a trillion dollars to the U.S. economy.” We’ve linked the full press release, which includes resources to help LGBTQ+ small business owners, below, as well as Forbes’s current list of resources for LGBTQ+ financial education. This month, we also learned about ‘The Trans Capitalist’. K. Kenneth Davis is a financial educator on a mission to help members of the LGBTQ+ community better understand their finances. In an article published by CNBC, Davis provides insights to how different groups are impacted by the financial services industry.

The Trevor Project is a nonprofit organization that offers counseling to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth. This month on their website you will find ‘Stories of Pride’, a collection of videos where members of the LGBTQ+ community share their journey. Their stories are insightful, sincere, and important.

What We’re Watching…

“Stories of Pride celebrates the stories of strength, resilience, and connection that shape LGBTQ young people’s sense of pride. Everyone’s story is different: pride can mean out and proud, questioning, or just beginning the journey.”

SMITHEREENS
Boyish

Boyish is an indie band that was founded by India Shore and Claire Altendahl in 2016. In 2021, they were the recipient of the LGBTQ+ Emerging Artist Award presented by the Music Forward Foundation. We’re loving this song from their most recent album, My Friend Mica, which was released last month.
